Discovering Kanchanaburi

The reason that we came to Kachanaburi was so that we could visit the Erawan water falls, also to see the bridge over the river Kwai that was built during World War II. The Erawan Water falls were quite fascinating. You walked up paths to 7 different water falls, my favorite was the one that you could slide off of number 4. In each of the water falls there were fish that nibbled your feet it felt really weird because it kind of hurt. The water was so refreshing because it was really hot that day.

I learned about prisoners of war during World War 2 at a Japanese Prisoner of war camp in Kanchanaburi, how they built the Bridge over the river Kwai. I watched the movie to understand what it was. We visited Hellfire pass (what the prisoners called it). The memorial was built with Australian government funding. An Australian prisoner of war wanted to make sure that the people that died building the railway would not be forgotten. As he was taken prisoner when he was only 18 to help build the bridge and railway. There was a video that showed how cruel the Japanese were to the prisoners, they starved them and over worked them, some even died of being over worked. You mostly saw what the Japanese did to the prisoners and what the prisoners had to do to build the bridge in the museum. Hellfire pass was the mountain the prisoner’s had to carve out by hand with hand tools. They called it hellfire pass because they worked on it 24h, until it was finished and at night with the oil lamps and the heat it was like hell for the prisoners.

We ate usually street food, one night we had a soup that was really good it was a very flavorful broth and it had pork, vegetables and noodles. at a restaurant, we had a ruby fish, a prawn casserole with glass noodles, chicken with cashews, with some smoothies. A little boy was playing with me, it was funny.

The house we stayed in was very big. It had big rooms a large living room and the house was nicely made but the bathrooms weren’t very convenient. The host was super nice, she brought us a platter of fresh fruits: mangos, papayas and dragon fruits. She told us we were the very first one to stay in this place.
Our stay in Kanchanaburi was wonderful but Ayutthaya was our next stop.
