Bali, Indonesia

The painful time in the plane had ended, and right when we got off the wonders came. The most amazing villa with a private pool. In the morning we had someone named Gede to cook us breakfast and clean the house. It was luxury but the most mind blowing thing was that it was only $75 a night. For months we had traveled and we hadn’t seen any friends, and we were in great luck that some made the journey to see us in Bali. What I really like about Bali was that the people were the kindest people of all the countrys we visited and the stores weren’t T-shirt shops or crap venders. Which made it so much nicer and not just a place for tourists.

The day after that we started visiting sights. The best of them was the Rock temple, Gunung kawi. The carvings were spectacular, there was an area that if you looked at it from the right angle it would completely remind you of Indiana Jones. I could see him pushing through the vines, with the water and the temple in sight. In the evening we watched the traditional Balinese dance called the Kecak (kech-ack), and the Trans Dance. The Kecak dance has a group of 100 men called the Gamelan Suara. They sit in a circle and they all sing is chack chak chak. They sing while the story of the Ramayana is being told by the most elderly of the group. It was amazing the energy of the voices and it was so cool with the story going on, it was just like WOW this is impressive. The Trans dance is a man that was put in a Trans and while he is in his Trans he walks on flaming coconuts. My mind was blown away, couldn’t believe he could walk on the hot coals. The expression on my face was like?.

The temple wasn’t that impressive but the rock that it was standing on was really cool, it was like a loop. On the way to the temple there were owls, civet cats and huge bats. A civet cat is a little bit like a coati. In Bali they call them Luwak’s (lu-ack). They use them to make the most expensive coffee in the world Kopi Luwak coffee. My dad made a donation so the guy gave my dad 2 bananas to give to the bats. It was so cool watching them grab it with their single clawed hands. They had a lot of trouble chewing especially the smaller one. After it got rainy so we went back to the villa.

The passing day we visited a lot of local temples. Truly I don’t want to see another temple on the rest of my entire trip. The Temples weren’t all that interesting. They had a few carvings here in there. But they were not much of a fascinating temple. After we explored town. I liked going around town much better than a lot of other places because there aren’t just stores full of t-shirts and junk. Then we settled back at the villa for the rest of the day.

After the temples came rice terraces. They were incredible. The layers upon layers of green rice plants. I had never seen rice terraces until Bali. They were much more incredible than I imagined. The hills carved into steps with rice plants. But they stretched out for kilometers. It was really cool to see something new. So far I’m really liking Bali. The culture and the people are probably the kindest on planet earth.
The following day was our first Balinese crafts class, or much simpler batik class. Our cab dropped us off and the first thing we did was pick out our design. Then we traced it. After came the hardest part of all Duh Duh Daaa waxing. You had to trace your picture with this hard to use stencil\brush. I was in incredible luck that the teachers did mine or else it would have been an atrocity. After came painting, you don’t want to see my rough draft unless you want your eyes to bleed. But my actual piece came out really nicely. After having it boiled in water it was outstanding. No it was just ok.
