Fiji, a little paradise

Bula! And welcome to Fiji. The big catamaran dropped us off early in the morning into a small speed boat. The waves rose and fell around us, crashing on the sides, splattering mist on our faces. The beach slowly came into view, settling a feeling of surprise in my belly. Fiji, I imagined as this magical turquoise paradise with people sipping at their Pina Coladas in lounge chairs on the perfect beach overlooking 5 star bungalows on the water. The rocky, wild mountains behind our wooden bungalows, the yellow gray sanded beach, all of those things didn’t scream paradise to me. I was distraught at first because at the time, a nice accommodation was all that mattered.

After the second day, though, I came around. The family-owned resort called Nagalia Lodge we were staying in wasn’t that fancy (bungalows on the beach), but the food was the best! Especially the breakfast beignets and tea. The Fijian people are the kindest people I’ve met on this trip. They have darker skin, frizzy black hair that looks like a perfectly trimmed mushroom atop their heads, and the women are usually buffer than the men. Right from our first day, they remembered our names by heart. And they really wanted us to feel like we were part of one big family.

They included us on a picnic on the beach, they made a bonfire for us, played the guitar at dinner time, took us on an open ocean adventure to a “white sandy beach”, played volleyball, we made woven palm leaf bracelets with the women, and organized dances like the limbo and the Bula dance for us. The Fijians always smile and when a task needed to be done, the whole family participates, the burden is never on one member of the family. Even when they are grown, they remain as a family; the sons live with the fathers, and the daughters, if they aren’t married, will too. Everybody, not just the mother, care about the children. I noticed how they raised their kids, that they all carry a deep love for one another.

My favorite activity that I did was go feed the white-tipped reef sharks. At 8:30am, we hopped onto the speedboat and made easy headway on the placid ocean. I had no idea how they had found this place because it was in the middle of the ocean. After putting on all of my gear (mask, snorkel, fins) I jumped off the boat into warm water. But was horrified when I saw a jellyfish. I hadn’t worn my rash guard so I was defenseless against their powerful sting. I cautiously swam by it but realized that it wasn’t alone, there was a whole minefield of them. I shirked them as best as I could until I reached the feeding grounds. And the sight that I saw was something I won’t forget for a long, long time. The sharks were swimming up to our guides and they were holding onto the sharks and were swimming with them. A shark swam up my side, its rough gray skin was alien compared to the slimy scales of tropical fish. The whole time I was there, it was a frenzy. Everyone was on top of each other trying to snap a pic of the sharks. As for the sharks, they hung around the bottom for the most part, except when our guides roused them from the depths and rode them to the surface. Seriously, seriously cool! It is sadly time to leave our island, the wonderful, kind people, and the Fijian food for the main island, Nadi.

At last! My desire for a luxurious hotel had been quenched! The Sofitel was a beautiful 5 star resort with impeccable rooms, and a giant pool. Yet there was something I missed about the Naqalia, and that was the kind hospitality that we were shown by the family. At the Sofitel, the people had visibly forced smiles pasted on their faces, and seemed stressed. They didn’t look very patient either. But other than that, the resort was amazing. The all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast and little activities throughout the day kept me busy. One night I got to see Fijian dancing. Their only instruments were bamboo tubes which the beat on the ground to produce a drum-like sound. The rest were the lively, high-spirited voices of the women. The men did most of the dancing. Their traditional palm leaf skirts flailed as they stomped their feet and waved their spears.

Fiji may not have been the paradise that I so hoped it would be. I realized that magazines are deceiving. They are only trying to sell you a product, and to do that, they put up the best pictures of places, edit them, and then you want to go there. But Fiji isn’t all Blue Lagoon. It’s mostly made up of normal-looking islands, with normal-looking water, normal-looking beaches, and amazingly kind people.

Inoubliable!
