Melia’s Roman Experience

After leaving the calm and tranquil Tuscan country side, Rome came as a bit of a shock. My first thought when we arrived was; “My parents are yelling at each other like Romans, we must be lost, again”. My second thought was; “AHHHHHH, THESE ROMANS ARE CRAZY DRIVERS, I’M GOING TO DIE TODAY!” but it turns out I didn’t, thankfully. There were cars parked in front of others and half on the sidewalks. That part freaked me out. Thankfully we got really lucky and saw a car leaving its parking space near our apartment. Speaking of which, the apartment was really nice. It was spacious, with tall ceilings and relatively open layout. Plus, my brother and I had an actual bedroom this time! J .

Nous avons quitter la charmante Toscane pour la bruyante et folle Rome. L’entrée dans Rome en voiture est quelque chose que je n’oublierais pas de sitôt. Mes parents se criant dessus car rien n’est indiqué pour savoir ou on va. Des chauffeurs qui coupent la route, des gens garaient de partout en double file!!!! Après avoir un peu tourné en rond, nous sommes arrivés à garer la voiture pas trop loin de notre destination. L’apart était vraiment bien, large et spacieux avec de hauts plafonds. Mon frère et moi avions notre propre chambre, un plus appréciable .

Almost immediately after dropping off our bags, we started wondering around. Finally, we found the metro station and we went to the Coliseum. It had a grand stature, which you don’t realize in the pictures. It was 50 meters tall, with 80 arches, and could seat 70,000 people. This immense amphitheater in the middle of Rome was like a giant bee hive, with swarms of tourists buzzing around it. It looked exactly as it did in the pictures. I had to take some pictures of it, I mean, how often do you get to see the Coliseum?

Nous sommes partis exploré la ville, premier stop de métro le colisée. C’est un édifice beaucoup plus impressionnant que prévu carpes photos ne lui rende pas justice. Il fait 50 m de haut, il y a 80 arches et pouvait contenir 70000 personnes. Ce soir il ressemblait plus à une ruche avec tous les touristes agglutinés autour. J’ai pris quelques photos, ce n’est pas tous les jours que je me balade autour de ce genre de monument.

After we got a good look at it and a few pictures, we decided to walk home, instead of taking the metro. It took us almost 40 minutes to walk across most of Rome, but we were exhausted and stopped at a pizzeria close to the apartment. The next day we got up and early to walk some more. We went to the Piazza Navona which had a big fountain and lots of artists. We visited the most well preserved Roman structure, the Pantheon. It is in the shape of a rotunda and has a domed ceiling with a central opening to the sky.

Nous sommes rentrés à pieds, il nous a fallu 40 minutes pour traverser presque tout Rome. Pour se remettre de notre fatigue, nous avons mangé à une pizzeria pas loin de l’apart. Le lendemain, nous avons visité piazza Navona, et le Panthéon un monument romain très bien préservé de forme ronde avec un oeil de verre au centre.

Back to the restaurant, it was horrible. They served us rotten salad and tomatoes, and the service was extremely slow. We definitely won’t be eating there again. That night, we went to the Vatican Museum. It was beautiful. There was an Egyptian room with sarcophagi and a very well preserved mummy. Then there were all kinds of statues and paintings. Some of these artists were Michaelangelo and Rafael. There was a whole hallway with 40 maps of Italy painted on the walls painted by Danti. It was all so stunning. We had to pay $74 for the 4 of us to get in, but we got an additional free sauna as a bonus. It was so hot and stuffy in there, it was horrible. I was relieved when we came back into our air-conditioned apartment!

Nous avons manger dans un resto assez horrible, ils nous ont servi des salades avec des feuilles pourries! Ma mère était folle, elle a tout renvoyé. Le reste était ok, mais nous n’y retournerons plus. Dans la soirée, nous avons visité les musées du Vatican. Je dois dire que j’ai été émerveillée par tant de beauté. Ils ont une section égyptienne avec des sarcophages magnifiques et aussi une momie très bien préservée. Des salles avec des statues, des peintures, des tapisseries, qui n’est finissaient plus. J’ai découvert la micro mosaïque. Les artistes sont entre autres Rafael, Danti (la salle des 40 cartes d’Italie) et bien sûr Michaelangelo et ses peintures dans la chapelle sistine. Nous avons payé 74 euros pour la visite, il y avait un bonus, sauna gratuit!!! Il faisait tellement chaud, c’était étouffant.

We visited St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican a day later and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The sheer size of it was overwhelming. But it was beautiful and majestic. The ceilings were ornately carved with gold finishing’s. The columns were all made out of different colored marble. There were other smaller sections on the sides with domed ceilings with frescoes and statues. Within the St. Peter’s, there were other smaller chapels where people go to pray. It is the largest Basilica in the world, now I understand why.

Nous avons visité la basilique Saint Pierre, le jour suivant. La structure était tout simplement gigantesque, mais très belle avec des plafonds sculptés recouverts de dorures, le tout soutenu par des colonnes de marbres de différentes couleurs. Il y avait aussi de plus petites chapelles dans des alcoves. Je venais de visiter la plus grande basilique au monde, je comprends mieux pourquoi maintenant!

After that fine visit, we decided to get gelato. There was a place near the apartment that was supposed to be delicioso. And it turned out to be just that. I got the flavors Nutella and Bartoccioso, which is a mix of chocolate and vanilla gelato with cookie chunks in it. I think that that was the best gelato I’ve had on this trip so far!

Pour ce remettre de cette visite, rien de mieux qu’une gelato! L’apart est près d’un des meilleurs glaciers de Rome, un vrai régal, j’ai choisi Nutella et Bartoccioso (mélange de chocolat, vanille avec des morceaux de gâteaux). Ca vaut le détour.

Rome was interesting to explore and I found that there were many churches, fountains, and obeliscs, every corner it seemed you would find one of those. It reminded me of New York, in terms of the noise, but otherwise I can’t compare Rome to any other cities. Tomorrow we will go to Naples and eat their so-called world famous pizzas.

Pour moi, Rome est la ville de fontaines, d’obélisques et d’églises, il y en a à tous les coins de rues. C’est une ville bruyante un peu comme New York, mais elle est unique. Demain direction Naples où parait-ton ils font les meilleures pizzas du monde.

Melia’s week in Tuscany

On September 11, we left the hustle of Florence for the quiet of the Tuscan country side. Our apartment was cute and rustic. My brother and I slept in a loft above the kitchen. It had a nice big pool, but it was too cold for me and that is probably how I later got sick. Even though it had nice amenities, we had trouble with the Wi-Fi. On one day it would work perfectly, but the next it would only work on certain devices and then on none. So that part was tricky. The apartment was near a quaint little village called Casole d’Elsa. The houses were all made out of stone and it had a pretty view of the fields of grass and vineyards, which are abundant in this region. We also went to Pisa. In my brother’s opinion, the tower was barely leaning, but according to everybody else, it was clearly a beautiful, but stupidly built, leaning tower. The architect who built it did not notice that the soil was unstable, thus causing his tower, and the rest of the buildings around it to sink and lean. Aside from the tower which brings it all the fame, Pisa isn’t a very impressive city.

Le 11 septembre, nous avons quitté l’agitation de Florence pour la campagne de Toscane. Notre gîte était vraiment mignon, tout en pierre. Je dormais dans un loft au dessus de la cuisine avec mon frère. Il y avait une grande piscine, mais l’eau était vraiment froide, c’est surement là que j’ai attrapé froid! Nous avons eu quelques problèmes avec internet parfois ça marchait parfois pas, assez frustrant quand tu dois t’en servir pour faire les blogs ou les devoirs. La maison était près du village de Casole d’Elsa, toutes les maisons sont en pierre et les villages sont en hauteur. Il y a des vues magnifiques sur les vignobles de la région. Nous sommes aussi allés à Pise. L’architecte qui a construit la tour n’avait pas remarqué que le sol était instable et de ce fait la tour s’est mise à pencher.

That’s why we only took pictures of the tower then ditched Pisa for Lucca, a neighboring city that is slightly less famous but much more beautiful. We went bike riding around the whole perimeter of the town on a bike\walking path. It remained mostly uneventful, except for a few nearly missed head-on collisions between myself and other bikes and pedestrians. Which once again proves that I am a horrible bike rider, and that leaving me on a bike should be considered a safety hazard!

Puis nous avons filé sur Lucca, ancienne ville fortifiée pas très loin de Pise. Nous avons loué des vélos et fait un tour en haut des remparts, c’était très sympa. Il fallait faire attention car il y avait beaucoup de piétons dans la ville ou de vélos! Je ne suis pas trop douée sur un vélo, il vaut mieux ne pas rouler trop près de moi sinon tout peut arriver!

While we visited villages on some days, on others we just stayed at the apartment relaxed. Well, at least my parents did. My brother and I had to do homework for a few hours each day. But we went swimming and played badminton during our free time.

Parfois, nous sortions visiter les villages voisins parfois nous restions à la maison pour relaxer. C’est sûr que pour mes parents c’était plus cool que pour nous, je devais faire mes blogs, et mes devoirs. Nous avons quand eu droit de nous amuser…

My parents wanted to take us to some sea side villages called the Cinque Terre. They woke us up early to get a head start for the 5 hour walk we would be doing between the villages. The sky had been menacing all morning. We drove 3 hours to get there. I felt car sick. When we were almost there, my parents looked on their phone and saw that there was going to be 100% rain in our destination. They claimed that just 2 days ago the weather was going to be sunny. So much for our hike. Instead, we turned back and went to Bologna, the culinary capital of Italy. We were surprised when we got there. The city was beautiful! Definitely NOT what we had expected. The buildings where all brightly painted and there where pasegios, which are covered porches with arches and frescos.

Mes parents avaient décidé de nous faire visiter les Cinq Terres, ils nous ont fait levés super tôt, puis nous avons roulé pendant presque 3 heures quand ils se sont aperçus qu’il allait pleuvoir à 100% !!!! J’étais malade dans la voiture!!! Rien qui allait quoi… Comme on était loin du village mes parents ont decidé d’aller jusqu’à Bologne. Cette ville est la capitale de la gastronomie italienne, mon père était enchanté. Nous avons été très surpris par cette ville qui n’est pas vraiment un grand stop sur les guides italiens, elle est très jolie. Une architecture différente avec des passages couverts sur les trottoirs. Ce qui n’était pas mal car il pleuvait ici aussi.

Unfortunately it was raining there too, and my sore throat, which had started the previous day got worse. We ate at a decent restaurant then continued walking. 2 days later we went to The Cinque Terre. Like all of the other places we went to, there were many tourists. That part was disappointing. We also didn’t get to do the hike.
Now the day has come for us to leave Tuscany and go to Rome.

La pluie n’a pas arrangé mon mal de gorge, c’était dimanche donc beaucoup de choses étaient fermés malheureusement. Deux jours plus tard et avec le soleil nous sommes allés aux Cinq Terres. Ce sont de jolies villages de pêcheurs aux maisons colorées mais il y avait trop de touristes, et ce n’était pas très agréable.

Jayden takes on the Vatican

When we first arrived in Rome I thought to myself these Romans drive like madmen. They drive very bad, very fast and park everywhere. We were very lucky to find a parking spot near where we stayed. We met the owner of the apartment, her name was Marina and she showed us around town then let us get settled in. Her place was much bigger and nicer than any other of the places we’ve stayed in, it had an actual living room, a nice kitchen, and 2 bedrooms. After we got settled in we took the metro to the Coliseum. It was huge, it was constructed for Titus the successor of Vespasian the Emperor. It is considered one of the greatest works of architecture ever made. My father, sister and I decided to take a visit inside. The Coliseum was very different than the outside. The actual arena is very small considering the games that had to be performed in it. Like Chariot races, gladiator fights, or games where they ordered prisoners in, then let lions enter to kill the prisoners.

Nous sommes arrivés à Rome, et là surprise les Romains conduisent comme des fous! Ils roulent trop vite, se garent n’importe où. Nous avons eu de la chance de trouver une place près de l’appartement que nous avions loué. La propriétaire s’appelait Marina, elle nous a montré le quartier puis nous a laissé les clefs. Son appartement était bien plus grand que tous les autres où nous avons séjourné. Il avait un grand salon, deux chambres vraiment bien. Nous avons pris le métro pour visiter le Colisée. Il était énorme, il a été construit pour Titus le successeur de l’empereur Vespasien. Cet édifice est considéré comme une oeuvre majeure d’architecture. Je l’ai visité avec mon père et ma soeur. L’intérieur était très différent de l’extérieur, il paraissait presque petit par rapport à l’enceinte extérieure. La piste n’est pas très grande par rapport à tout ce qui se passait dedans (course de chariots, bataille de gladiateurs, et même des lions étaient lâchés contre des prisonniers ).

People in Roman times put graffiti by carving the name of their favorite gladiator in the stone, or carving a picture. It was the biggest Coliseum ever built at the time, it could fit 40-70 thousand people.We saw the Forum too, but there are only a few columns still up. So it was hard to see what it was supposed to be. We left by Metro to the central market to get gelato at one of Rome best gelaterias, Baccio. It made me feel like☺, and not like that☹. After that, we went to see the Pantheon it was very cool. It is the best preserved Roman building. During this trip I am in charge of the Gopro camera. We went inside I took a picture that was straight up at the ceiling.

Les Romains gravaient les pierres à l’intérieur du nom de leur gladiateur préféré. C’est le colisée le plus grand jamais construit à cette époque, il pouvait contenir jusqu’à 70 000 personnes. Nous avons aussi vu le Forum mais il ne reste que quelques colonnes donc il était plus difficile de se faire une idée sur la grandeur des édifices. Après cette visite, nous nous sommes rendus vers le marché central déguster une glace italienne dans l’une des meilleures Gelateria de Rome, Baccio. J’ai adoré. nous avons aussi visité le panthéon, c’est l’édifice Romain le mieux préservé. Durant ce voyage, je ferais les photos avec le Gopro, un appareil photo qui prend des photos ou videos avec un grand angle.

The Gopro allows you to take wide-angle pictures or videos. We only stayed enough time so we could take a few pictures. Then we went to Piazza Navona where there were statues made by Bernini a very famous artist. We continued walking until we reached Campe di Fiori a market where we bought a fruit smoothie that had mango, papaya, oranges, and pomegranate. Back at the apartment I did some of home work, Megawords and maths. The next day we saw The Vatican museums it was very amazing to see. We started touring the Egyptian section which had very interesting things in it like a mummy that we could see. Its face was very ugly and its skin was a very dark brown and had the consistency of leather. They explained how the Egyptians did a Mummy(like take the organs out and put them in jars, and got the brain out with a hook). They had beautiful sarcophagi.

Nous nous sommes promenés place Navona, très connue de forme ovale avec des statues de Bernini. Nous avons bu un smoothie frais au marché Campo del Fiori, fait de mangues, de jus de grenadiers, papayes et oranges. De retour à l’appart, j’ai du faire des devoirs de maths et de grammaire. Le jour suivant, nous avons visité les musées du Vatican. C’était très impressionnant, la visite a commencé par la salle d’Egypte. Il y avait une mommie (il y avait des expliquations sur la momification, comment ils enlevaient les organes, puis le cerveau avec un crochet enfilé par le nez!), des sarcophages, des statues de granites. Tout provenait d’Egypte du temps de l’occupation Romaine.

There were statues of Egyptian gods that were made of granite the hardest rock to sculpt with. All the pieces came directly from Egypt when the Romans had invaded it. We saw the Sistine Chapel that was painted by Micheal Angelo it was very beautiful, on the first wall he painted a priest that was skinned alive I would have put a picture but since the room was dark you needed to put flash on your camera and if you take the picture it destroys the paintings. Nobody is allowed to take pictures inside this room. The famous picture of Adam almost touching fingers with god is on the ceiling, it means that Adam was the first human and when he touches fingers with god he is giving life to humanity. There were also other sculptures of Micheal Angelo but other rooms. We saw paintings by Rafael too. There was a room that had forty maps of Italy, all painted by hand, finished in only 18 months. In another room, we saw bath tubs made of granite.

Nous avons vu la chapelle Sistine peinte par Michael Angelo, on ne pouvait pas prendre de photos à l’intérieur pour ne pas endommager les fresques. C’est la photo la plus connue entre le doigt d’Adam qui touche presque Dieu (Dieu donne la vie en touchant Adam). J’ai été impressionné par la peinture d’un prêtre dépecé. Il y avait d’autres salles avec des sculptures de Michael Angelo mais aussi des peintures de Rafael autre très grand peintre. Il y avait un couloir avec 40 cartes de l’Italie, tous peints à la main. Il a fallu 18 mois pour finir cette pièce.

We saw St. Peters basilica it was amazing. The architecture was of stunning statues of popes and their tombs. It had magnificent paintings. The ceiling was incredible just by itself, it was painted and the moldings were painted gold.

Nous avons visité la basilique Saint Pierre. L’architecture était grandiose avec les tombeaux de certains papes et les statues de la vierge. Le plafond était impressionnant, peint et orné de dorures.

It is the biggest basilica ever built. I forgot to tell you how long we waited to get in !!! We queue for 1 hour, but the result was worth the wait. The Pope is guarded by Swiss guard wearing a funny outfit. Our stay in Rome was great but we have to leave for the Amalfi coast.

C’est la plus grande basilique jamais construite. J’ai oublié de mentionner la queue qu’on a du faire pour rentrer dedans, 1 heure!! J’ai beaucoup ralé mais en fait ça valait la peine. Le pape est gardé par les gardes Suisses, ils ont un costume que je n’aimerai pas porter. En route pour la côte Amalfitaine…

Jayden’s Tuscany

We arrived in the countryside of Tuscany. We found the place we rented. The first day, we settled in and took it easy, we bought groceries and explored just around. The next day, we visited Sienna and its big central square where there is the grand horse race between the different quarters of the town. The locals are very passionate about it, it happens twice a year. The following day we did homework, and hang out at the pool. I am working on my blogs and Mega words books. The pool was really cold but refreshing. How do like my Roman outfit? We took it easy and stayed home a lot.

On est à la campagne cette semaine, notre petite maison est au bout d’une piste de 4 km. Le premier jour, on s’est installé, on a fait quelques courses et des devoirs. On a visité Sienne et sa grande place. On prend la vie plus relax ici, mais du coup je dois faire plus de devoirs, et parfois on va à la piscine l’après midi.La piscine est une peu fraîche. Comment trouvez vous mon costume de Romain?Je travaille aussi sur mes blogs.

Another day, we went to Pisa. The tower does really lean we did photos where it looked like we were holding the tower up. When we finished visiting the town we went to Lucca, it is an ancient fortress and we rode bikes on top of the fortified walls. The bikes did really help, I really enjoyed it, it was more fun than always walking.

Un autre jour, on est allé à Pise, je pensais que la tour ne penchait pas trop mais quand on arrive sur place on s’en rend vraiment compte. Puis nous sommes allés à Lucca, super ville, on avait loué des vélos et on s’est baladé dans la ville. Elle a une place qui fait comme une arène.

We also visited some small stoned villages around us like Voltero, San Gimignano. There we bought porcheta meat (they cook a whole pig then slice it), it was very good.

On a visité les villages alentour, comme San Gimignano ou Voltero, villages en pierre en hauteur.

We did some little walks. One night when we were coming back from town we saw six wild boars crossing in front of our car, and 2 foxes. I have told you about our stay in Tuscany, our next stop is Rome.

On s’est promené dans la campagne alentour. En rentrant d’un restaurant une nuit, on a croisé deux renards et un groupe de 5 sangliers a traversé la route. Prochain stop Rome.
